Thanks to the famous poem “The Night before Christmas”, we know that Christmas stockings have been “hung up with care by the chimney for over 200 years”. But just how long the tradition has been and why it was so popular is not so well known.
Most agree that the tradition of the Christmas stocking is tribute to St. Nicholas. He is the Christian saint of antiquity, which is known for his generosity and the gift to the needy. He is the real man behind today’s Santa Claus traditions.
Legend says that St. Nicholas heard of a widowed man who could not pay his three daughters. This was a desperate situation during this time. St. Nicholas let the gold coins down the chimney of the widower at night. One of the coins fell into one of the stockings that hung on the fire to dry. The widower and his daughters were overjoyed to find the coins the next morning.
The example of Holy Nicholas continues to shape our idea of the true Christmas spirit! My children also take part in the tradition of St. Nicholas Day, a boot for “St. Nick ”to fill with treats every December 6th.
